Realized last night that the fuel fill nozzle needs to be modified in order to accept the diesel pump at the station. And no, before you say it, I'm not trying to use the massive big rig fuel pump nozzle...
![]() Seems to be a similar drive compared to the 2.5L gasser, but I've only driven it about 10 miles so far, and not really any highway driving yet. Gotta work out the bugs here and there first. |

Found out last night that the electric pump within the fuel tank is too high of a pressure for the diesel system it seems, and is causing leaks. Going to attempt to connect a pressure guage to it, and if it is too high, will have to disconnect the fuel pump relay and use the mechanical pump mounted to the engine.
Does anyone know if I can suck fuel through the electric pump if it isn't on? |

After searching the internet, couldn't find a concrete answer, so I installed a pressure guage, and am seeing 60 psi with engine off, and fluctuating pressure of 55-65 psi when running at idle. This measurement is taken just before the injection pump, with the jeep sending unit operating in the tank.
Gonna get a regulator and tune this down a touch... Lookin for around 10psi... Last edited by Kriesel : 08-04-2010 at 12:46 PM. |

Man, I don't know if you can regulate it down that much - that would be a lot of fuel going back through the return line. I'd attempt the mechanical pump option first - that's cheaper anyway.

You do want to run a lift pump to your injection pump. The mechanical fuel pump on that is more than likely used as a lift pump.
My experience is mostly GM diesels with the 6.5 and 6.6, in which the 6.5 requires a lift pump. The 6.6 uses suction, and although it works in stock form, adding a lift pump gives you alot of room to add good filtration and still be able to move large amounts of fuel. I personally run about 2.5 psi to the IP on my Duramax truck. Almost 100k on that setup with no issues to date. I also know my father in law had tons of issues with a 98 24 valve Cummins when the lift pump went out. It caused the IP to go out, and they aren't cheap to replace. If you want a decent inline fuel pump, check out www.kennedydiesel.com. He offers a lift pump setup that he uses on the DMax trucks. It's a pretty slick setup with a pump controller and all. If you want more than 2.5 psi, I do know he has set them up in series for some of his Rediculous HP Duramax builds. They are a touch expensive for a build on a budget though. I know he offers a kit, but you may be able to just get the pumps and the controller w/ wiring. He also offers some filtration options too IIRC. Check it out at least so you know what the options are. Waldo

Here is the regulator I'm using: ![]() Need to run a second return line, as putting 50psi would backfeed into the engine's return, and can't put a check valve in it because the valve would never open due to the return pressure from the engine never overcoming the pressure from the regulator. So, one supply, two returns, 10psi in the end. Then i have a stock jeep wrangler fuel pump for ease of replacement later in life. Also made the filler neck hose enlarged to accept diesel fill nozzles at the pump. (pic later) |
